  • 10:00—24:00 Milan Kozelka: On the Road House of the Lords of Kunštát

    Milan Kozelka
    On the Road
    11. 5. 2022 – 19. 6. 2022
House of the Lords of Kunštát

Curator: Vladimír Havlík, Pavlína Morganová, Jana Písaříková

The artist and author Milan Kozelka (1948‒2014) left an indelible mark on Czech art, mainly in the 1980s and 90s. In the 1960s he devoted himself to poetry and his poems are today placed in the context of the Czech beatnik movement. From the 1970s Kozelka became involved in action art. He drew attention to himself primarily through the series Contacts, which he created at the beginning of the 1980s in the Bohemian Forest. His extreme body actions (during one of them he suspended himself in the white water of the Hamerský stream) are an important contribution to the history of Czech body art. In the 1970s and 80s he simultaneously developed his visual art creations in the form of conceptual drawings or land-art installations. Kozelka always followed current events and his restlessness drove him to more actions, often of a political nature.

The preparation and organisation of Milan Kozelka's exhibition, which will provide a broad evaluation of his versatile, remarkably authentic and simultaneously contradictory work, has been a joint project of several galleries (Brno House of Arts, Gallery of Fine Arts in Cheb and Ústí nad Labem House of Arts). The exhibition is accompanied by the monographic publication Svázáno do Kozelky (which might loosely translate as Tied Limbs) by the Větrné mlýny publishers. It shows for the first time Milan Kozelka and his work in its entirety as a multimedia and conceptual artist, performer, poet, prose writer and initiator of diverse activities. The presentation at the House of the Lords of Kunštát will be unique in making public documentation of some of the previously unknown body-art and land-art works alongside other documents preserved in the archive of Kozelka’s friend and collector Vladimír Meistr. In addition, it will highlight the political and environmental aspect of Kozelka's work. The example of this multifaceted personality can be used to reveal the totalitarian period in all its complexity and ambiguity and show the defiance and fragility of an individual facing the power pressures of society.

  • 10:00—24:00 Viktor Pivovarov: The Gardens of the Monk Rabinovich House of Arts Brno

    Viktor Pivovarov
The Gardens of the Monk Rabinovich
    6. 4. 2022 – 3. 7. 2022
    House of Arts

    Curator: Máša Černá Pivovarová
    Co-curator: Terezie Petišková

The exhibition The Gardens of the Monk Rabinovich at House of Arts Brno presents part of the oeuvre of Viktor Pivovarov, one of the founders of Moscow conceptualism, who permanently settled in Prague in 1982.

The selection of paintings was influenced by the gallery space and encompasses both earlier works and brand-new cycles displayed in Brno for the first time. It will also be the first occasion to show the artist's sculptures created directly for the exterior of the House of Arts. They are the first ever large-scale sculptures in Pivovarov's work.

The exhibition will also include the so-called albums. This specific art form of conceptual art, invented by Ilya Kabakov and Viktor Pivovarov, combines text and painting in a compelling way.

The whole exhibition is conceived as a journey through the various exhibition rooms, which can be perceived as special gardens. We can walk in the musical, yellow, June, eidetic, nocturnal or lost garden. Not to mention The Gardens of the Monk Rabinovich representing a distinctive plant kingdom. Each room-garden shows completely different painting cycles and albums whose common link is a very fragile, original poetics.

Viktor Pivovarov is being presented in Brno in this wide range for the fifth time. The exhibition Painting and Text was held at the House of the Lords of Kunštát in 1989, with Jiří Valoch as curator, and in 2010 the exhibition They, curated by Marek Pokorný, was staged at the Moravian Gallery in Brno.

    STRWÜÜ
Viscosity and Dissociation, or the Sea without Horizon
    21. 4. 2022 – 5. 6. 2022
    Gallery G99

The artist duo STRWÜÜ was founded by Jo Wanneng and Lukas Fütterer in 2014.

They kidnaped a plant, ate for a stop motion animation and performed together with a giant water lily in a pond. They had inaudible sound objects concealed, used each other as marionettes and spent a long time to move a small stick slowly forward. They layered animals into ever-changing patterns, provided old printers with prosthesis and made Chinese pigeon whistles circle in a huge hall. They tied strings to shape sounds, let insects rain and constructed noise as unstable as possible. They bridged time to generate space, accompanied industrial buildings while oscillating and forced air to dance. They deprived fans of their cooling effect, cooked rosin to engender friction. Sank a mycelium in dirges and soldered a low-frequency flock ritually for days.

The exhibition project was originally planned for 2020, but due to the pandemic it was delayed by two years.

    Other Worlds

    19. 2. - 22. 5. 2022

    Curator: Radka Kaclerová

The work of photographer Tomáš Chadim is based on a visual reflection of the Czech landscape. Although his photographic compositions deal with landscape scenery, he is not interested in its real arrangement. In his case, the landscape is always rediscovered and reshaped. The author has long been working with playful transformation of the photographed material, he often uses digital manipulation and composes scenes, which appear realistic at first glance, however on closer observation turn into fantastic landscapes where nothing is as it seems.
